Getting the Farm Ready for Winter

Winter is creeping in, and that means it’s time to start getting everything on the farm ready before the cold really sets in. There’s always a long list this time of year, but there’s something so satisfying about crossing things off and knowing our animals will be comfortable no matter what the weather brings.

A few weeks ago, my husband and father-in-law spent a long weekend hauling and stacking hay for the winter. They worked hard getting it put up for all the animals—including the ones they didn’t exactly ask for. I might be the reason our herd (and flock) continues to grow.

This week has been all about finishing up the details: setting up heated water buckets so no one has to deal with frozen water in the mornings, and giving the goat and chicken barns a good, deep clean. Fresh bedding, dry floors, and tidy stalls make such a difference—especially once the snow and mud start mixing together. There’s nothing quite like walking into a clean barn that smells like hay and pine shavings.

Winter prep always feels like a mix of exhaustion and contentment. It’s a lot of work, but there’s peace in knowing everything and everyone is ready for the season ahead. Once the chores are done and the last animal is tucked in for the night, we can finally take a deep breath and enjoy the quiet that comes with winter on the farm.

How are you getting ready for winter where you are? Whether it’s stacking firewood, cleaning out the chicken coop, or just digging out the snow boots, I’d love to hear how you prepare for the cold months ahead.
