A Birthday I’ll Never Forget
Getting goats was the turning point that pushed me to make our homestead a reality. What started as an ordinary birthday morning quickly became the beginning of our farm story.
My husband and in-laws made sure this birthday would be one I’d never forget — in the sweetest, most unusual way possible. These wonderful people know the way to my heart and always find ways to make me feel deeply loved.
The Mysterious Road Trip
That morning, my husband asked me to wear my sunflower dress — his favorite — and told me we were going on a little adventure. With a mix of curiosity and excitement, we piled into the truck with his parents and hit the road. After a fun, hour-long drive filled with laughter and mystery, we finally arrived at our destination.
To my utter surprise and delight… it was a goat auction!
The Surprise of a Lifetime
Now, some might wonder, “A goat auction for a birthday?”
But for me, it was perfect. I’d always dreamed of having a small farm — with chickens, goats, ducks, and all the simple joys of country life. Standing there among the bleats and bustle, I realized that my dream was about to come true.

Love at First Nibble
Before the auction began, I spotted a small white goat standing alone in the auction barn. Unsure if she was even for sale, I stepped closer. An older gentleman nearby smiled and handed me a cracker. “Go ahead,” he said. I offered it through the fence, and she nibbled it right from my hand — and in that moment, I was completely in love.
The Bidding Begins
When the auctioneer started his rapid-fire chant, the first goat up was the little white one I’d fallen for. My heart raced as bids flew back and forth. Before I knew it, I was in a fierce bidding war with another determined woman. The price climbed to $100, and I hesitated — was that too much?
Just then, my sweet mother-in-law “gently” tapped me on the back of the head and whispered, “Do you want her?” Without a moment’s doubt, I said yes. When the auctioneer called $115, I raised my card. A few breathless seconds later came the word I’ll never forget: “Sold!”
I was officially a goat owner.
A Perfect Companion
As the next few goats came through, my eyes landed on a little brown one with floppy ears and the kindest expression. I knew she (well — he!) would make the perfect companion for our white goat. I joined the bidding once again and soon had my second goat in tow.
That day, I left the auction with two beautiful goats: a spunky white female I named Grace, and a gentle brown male I call Willow.

The Beginning of Our Farmstead Journey
Some people might think it’s odd to be overjoyed at a goat auction, but for me, it was the start of something special— a life closer to the land, where hard work, faith, and love grow side by side.
Grace and Willow were just the beginning of Whispering Grace Family Farm. They remind me daily that the best dreams often come true in the most unexpected ways.
